Using a PS Eye on PC

I know many people including myself have bought or planning to buy a PS Eye only to use it on LittleBigPlanet and were wondering if this powerful camera could be used as a webcam on a PC.

Well, the quick answer is, YES but not naturally and out of the box! It is a USB camera and when you plug it to your Windows driven PC, Windows finds a new Hardware but what its missing is a fully functional and compatible driver and the DirectShow component. If you do a quick search, you’ll find many developers have started projects, aiming to make it happen and never finished it. Well, with no low-level hardware information released by the manufacture, it’s not easy to write the interface software.

Well, your wait is almost over! It’s not final but close enough! Alex Popovich has been working on it for a while now and his latest release seems to work perfectly! So, to download the latest files and to get more information on recent updates, visit Alex Popvich’s blog.

This news may reduce the disappointment caused by the lack of the ability to import images directly which forces us to have a PS Eye only for this purpose.
